  • CARPUTER - DASHPC

Ok, I've been a member of the DashPC for over a month now and I've done nothing with it. I have got to start playing with this thing a bit, if only to give myself a few ideas of what to do with it and have a direction of my own.

  • Carputer - DashPC

I'm now one of the proud developpers of the DashPC on sourceforge.net I sincerely hope that I will be able to find the time to really make a difference, the learning curve is going to be a bit steep but I feel up to it. http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/dashpc/ This is a Linux-based project and I think that I've made the right choice in ...

  • Carputer - more ideas

A few extra ideas for the carputer Essentially, while reading these ideas consider the fact that the car could be reading these: Morning paper Your work schedule for the day Your e-mail As a 'Net admin, Alerts Chat session, you respond verbally and it does speech recognition to respond Weather alert Traffic alert Should get a few more ...

  • Carputer Second Thoughts

I'm having second thoughts about my declarations of using Wdz over Linux as the platform for operating my carputer. Some very knowledgeable people whom I respect are bringing some information forward and this is causing me to re-evaluate my final analysis. One of the main reasons why Linux makes me uncomfortable is my lack of knowledge on it. ...

  • Carputer running Windows

Ok, somebody is going to kill me, Or better yet, they are going to let me live and make me go through a living hell... The linux car computer is actually going to be a complex technical piece, the more research that I do the more I notice that basic issues that I'm trying to solve under Linux (simply because of lack of Linux experience) I ...

  • Not one car computer at this auto show...

I went to an auto show over the week-end with my brothers, there were some nice looking cars in there. BMW, Honda, Acura, Kia - mostly all with fair paint jobs and extensive audio modifications. I've seen more than one car that didn't have a back seat anymore and replaced the seat with speakers in a formation and precision that could make ...

  • Carputer redundancy in a vehicle

This blog will either get people to label me as a nut or as a forward thinker. Let them decide... I can't help thinking that my pc crashes, of course Linux never ever crashes (of course not, it's made of alien hardware which has never been know to have any issues) and therefore won't apply here... yeah, right... ALL COMPUTER SYSTEMS HAVE THE ...

  • Software Integration Rant

As the CIO of a company that creates software I usually have some rather unique views about software. Also, having about 19 years of actual software development under my belt usually adds to those unique views. Here's my rant today: Why are people still developping software with no APIs that consequently don't talk to anything? I'm not just ...

  • Non-Tactile Interface for Carputer?

A friend/feedback-provider suggested that I use buttons to add to the Carputer and he actually triggered a series of chain-reaction events inside my head, here is the conclusion of these micro-explosions: A touchscreen interface is as much a distraction on the “output” side as on the “input” side - reaching out to touch a ...

  • Carputer Interface Thoughts

I gave some serious thoughts to the interface of my Carputer and here are some thoughts, no decision has been reached yet. Firstly, I have big concerns over temperature issues, as I live in canada I'm not convinced that an LCD screen could survive a single night parked outside when the winter temperatures can potentially reach -40 degrees celcius ...
